No Country for Old Men
This is a review for both the book and the movie.
To start off with, both the book and the movie are very similar. During the viewing of the movie I did not see many differences, unless they were very subtle. In fact, I recognized *much* of the talking as being word-for-word what was in the book.
I enjoyed both of these(The book was great...We had to read it for school, otherwise I would not have read it) quite a bit.
Story
The story is about a man (Moss) who is out hunting deer. During his hunt he ends up scaring the deer off and so he follows them to their new area. There he finds many abandoned vehicles. He cautiously goes over to the vehicles to see what happened, and while he is there he finds a briefcase with 2+ million dollars in cash.
As the story goes on a new character, Chigurh (pronounced Shih-gur...Not sugar...), who feels the money is his. In attempting to recover the funds, he kills anyone and everyone who gets in his way. He doesn't even think twice about it. The closest he is willing to go in terms of not killing someone is to flip a coin and have the person call it. If they call it right, they live. If they don't, they die.
So as time goes along, Moss is already suspicious that someone is after him (who wouldn't be? He had over 2 million dollars of someone's money!). He has his wife go hide at her mother's house and then run off elsewhere to keep safe. Sadly, Chigurh already knew where they were and where they were going because of phone bills.
Chigurh ends up finding Moss because of a tracking device in the money that Moss didn't know about. The two got in a gun fight and Moss made it out, but barely, and threw the money off near a lake before he passed out and woke in a hospital.
While at the hospital Moss meets one of Chigurh's old friends, Wells. They speak and Wells warns Moss that he is messing with the wrong person, and gives him notice that Chigurh already knows where his wife is at/going. Moss keeps telling him he can handle himself.
After he's out of the hospital and some time goes along, Moss ends up calling Wells, only to have Chigurh answer the phone. Chigurh is very irritated at this point and gives him a choice between giving up the money or having his wife killed for his actions. Chigurh also lets Moss know he's going to die whether he gives the money back or not, but he can save his wife's life. Moss refuses.
Later on Moss ends up being killed and Chigurh goes to Moss' wife. He speaks to her and explains that she is going to die because of her husband's choice, and explains that it's his fault. She begs him not to kill her so he flips a coin, and she calls it wrong. He kills her and it's over!
This is the first story I've read where the bad guy ends up winning.
My View
I found the characters to be well played out both in the movie and the book. There were a few twists and turns I did not expect.
The one thing to look out for in the movie is the killing. There is a *lot* of death in it, because you see Chigurh killing anyone and everyone who gets in his way. I found this to be more heroic than anything. Not because what he was doing was good, but because he never gave up. No matter what happened, he pushed on for what he felt was right.
Moss, to me, could be considered as a bad person. Cocky, possibly, but because of him his wife died. Throughout the story I kept getting the feeling he cared more about his money than he did his wife. He kept hiding everything from her (which could be to protect her) and pretty much gave her life in hopes he could kill Chigurh.
Rating
I give this story (both book and movie) a 9.5/10. Everything was well played out and it was suspenseful throughout the entire thing. There were very few times I felt it was going too slow. During most of it I was sitting there thinking "what if Chigurh pops in right now with his shotgun?!"
